TONGA'S All Stars Aussie rules team was defeated by New Zealand 45-13 at the opening round of the 2011 Youth Australian Football League Oceania Cup at Albert Park in Suva, Fiji on December 14.

The week-long tournament with eight teams, included Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Nauru, New Zealand, Fiji and the AFL Under 15 Indigenous squad "Flying Boomerangs", and the Oceania U15's.

In the first round the Fijians went down on home soil to Papua New Guinea 53-6, while Nauru defeated Vanuatu 62-19.

New Zealand defeated Tonga All Stars, 45-13.

The Flying Boomerangs were just too good for the Oceania Under 15's, thrashing them 141-15.

On December 15, Tonga's All Stars were to meet Nauru; while Papua New Guinea was to play against Vanuatu; and New Zealand to play Fiji.

The finals of the Oceania Cup will be held on Saturday, December 17 .

AFL Stars

Meanwhile AFL stars Fiji's Nic Naitanui and Tongan Israel Folau are in Fiji to promote the sport and support the tournament at Albert Park.

It is understood that the teams not only compete for the Oceania Cup 2011, but players may also be selected for the AFL South Pacific Team that will compete in the 2012 AFL U-16 Championship in Sydney, next year.

The Oceania Cup was won by Tonga in 2009 and Papua New Guinea in 2010.
