Tonga High School wins 2009 Inter College Sports [1]

Tonga High School won Tonga's 2009 Inter College Sports Competition for the second consecutive year, with a total of 54 medals, including 26 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze.

Tonga High school snatched the top medals spot after winning the most gold medals.

They were followed closely by 'Apifo'ou College in second place with 40 medals including 21 gold, 11 silver and eight bronze.

Queen Salote College came third with 36 medals including 17 gold, 13 silver and six bronze; with Tupou College in fourth with 48 medals of 16 gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze.

Vava'u Secondary School who led the first two days of the sports competition dropped down to fifth place with 15 gold medals, 15 silver and two bronze.

Australian scholarships

In the announcement of the Inter Collegiate Sports Medal table on today, Monday April 20, the Best Sportswoman in the Open Girls division was awarded to Vasi Feke of Tonga High School, while Paseka Fangupo of 'Apifo'ou College won the Best Sportsman for the Open Men division. 



The best athletes were awarded two sports scholarships to Australia, funded by the Australian Government.

The exciting national sports competition was held on April 15-17 at the Teufaiva Outdoor Stadium in Nuku'alofa.

Cheer leaders

Nine schools participated in a Digicel Cheer Competition on Wednesday and Thursday. Digicel sponsored the five prizes for the winning schools, presented by the Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Dr. Tevita Palefau on the final day. The 1st prize went to Tonga College 'Atele, ($1,000); 2nd Tupou College, Toloa ($800); 3rd Liahona High School ($600); 4th Tonga High School ($400); and 5th Queen Salote ($200). A special prize of $100 for best Cheer Leader went to Palei Vahai of Tonga College, 'Atele.
