'Ikale Tahi overcame a determined challenge from Zimbabwe claiming a 36-26 victory in their opening Pool F match of the World Rugby Nations Cup, with forward power dominating the closing stages, on 4 July 2026, in Colorado.
The opening match began as a defensive battle with neither side able to score during the opening 23 minutes.
'Ikale Tahi finally broke the deadlock when flyhalf Patrick Pellegrini delivered a looping pass for fullback Telusa Veainu to cross for the first try. Tonga quickly extended their advantage through loose-head prop Fatongia Paea, who finished strongly to give Tonga control of the contest.
However, Zimbabwe dominated much of the second half, driven by 22-year-old Edward Sigauke. Sigauke produced a standout performance, first slicing through the Tongan defence before setting up Tino Mavesere for a try. He later scored one himself.
Zimbabwes' Sables threatened an upset during their second-half surge, but Tonga regained control in the closing stages as their forward pack asserted its physical dominance.
The two-part series between the nations will conclude in Queensland next year.
'Ikale Tahi is now directing their focus on their next game with Spain this Saturday in Canada.
The Nations Cup Cycle
The inaugural edition of the Nations Cup debuted as a 12-team tournament acting as a stepping stone for emerging unions leading into the 2027 World Cup. It returns to action in even-numbered years (e.g., 2026, 2028), meaning the international schedule defers completely to the World Cup in 2027.
