Tonga Police say investigations are continuing into an alleged firearm threat against a journalist at the office of Kele’a Publication in Kolomotu’a, Tongatapu, more than a month after the incident was reported.
The alleged incident occurred on 23 April 2026, when a journalist was reportedly threatened while alone at the office.
Deputy Commissioner of Operations Command Halatoa Taufa said the investigation has been difficult due to limited evidence. “There were no CCTV leads and no direct witnesses,” he told Matangi Tonga.
He said police have been focusing on surrounding areas and possible avenues of investigation to identify the suspect.
“The investigation is ongoing because the victim was the only witness, and significant work is required,” he said.
The alleged threat reportedly followed Kele’a Publication’s media coverage, including a news article and a talk-back radio programme on FM91.5 discussing a member of the Comancheros motorcycle gang facing a life sentence and featuring an interview with a foreign correspondent.
According to Kele’a Publication, an unknown person entered the office late in the afternoon on 23 April wearing a black hooded cardigan and carrying a handgun.
The suspect allegedly threatened the journalist over earlier reporting related to ’Eneasi Taumoefolau and alleged links to the Australian outlaw motorcycle gang, the Comancheros, warning against further reports before leaving in a waiting vehicle.
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
