The Tonga Under-12 football tournament for boys and girls teams competing in grassroots matches, a sporting initiative aimed at early skills development for the players, was held at Veitongo on Saturday 23 May 2026.
Among the games of the day, Veitongo defeated ‘Atata 2-0, while Longolongo recorded a 2-0 win over Talasiu.
Organisers recognised individual performances, with Sioeli Vai of Veitongo and Apolosi Latu of Longolongo named “Players of the match”.
Coaches said that regular competition and training for this age group are vital for building the basic skills needed for future growth in the sport.
Japanese coach Shinsuke Ogiso, who has been working in Tonga since April 2025, said football development at Under-12 level was important because children were still learning the fundamentals of the game.
Ogiso told Matangi Tonga that younger players are more adaptable to learning technical skills, teamwork and game awareness.
Transport difficulties
He said regular training sessions is necessary to help players improve, but transport difficulties often limited attendance during the week.
Ogiso siad that ideal development would involve children training three to four times a week, however, most players are currently only able to attend on weekends or match days.
He said coach education remained essential for player development, but coaches need the right techniques to teach children effectively.
Team coaches involved in the competition said grassroots tournaments provide valuable opportunities for players to gain confidence and experience in match situations.
They said developing skills at an early age was important before players moved into older age groups where learning basic techniques could become more difficult.
A total of 12 teams competing across two fields in grassroots matches including, Navutoka, ‘Atataa, Folaha, Marist, Veitongo, Lapaha, Hihifo 1, Hihifo 2, Talasiu, Ha’ateiho, Longolongo and Nukuhetulu.
Parents and supporters attended throughout the day as young players competed in sunny conditions at Veitongo.
