A parliamentary delegation from the Legislative Assembly of Tonga has concluded an official visit to the People’s Republic of China held from May 6 - 15, 2026.

The delegation was led by Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Vaea, and included 10 Members of Parliament and four supporting staff members.

The visit followed an invitation from the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC) to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga.

According to the delegation, the visit aimed to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and deepen understanding between Tonga and China as part of broader bilateral relations.

During the visit, the delegation toured the Great Wall of China. Lord Vaea and several members of the delegation climbed toward the Third Tower on the south side of the Great Wall, while other members explored beyond the Fourth Tower.

The delegation also participated in a series of meetings, thematic dialogues, site visits and engagements with government officials, educational institutions and companies. Discussions focused on Tonga-China relations, parliamentary cooperation, development priorities, renewable energy and other areas of mutual interest.

Key engagements included meetings with Vice Minister Lu Kang and other senior officials, participation in the Thematic Dialogue between the Communist Party of China and foreign political parties in Hebei Province, and visits to several Chinese companies and innovation centres.

Sites visited included CCECC, Hytera Company, the JA Solar Manufacturing Base, Tongfu Smart Farm, the Multi-station Integrated DC Microgrid Demonstration Project and the Dongguan Agricultural Technology and Research Center.
