Young rugby league teams from across Tonga showcased their skill and determination during the finals of the Tonga Junior Rugby League Competition 2026, held at Teufaiva Stadium on Saturday, 25 April.

The event brought together Under-14 to Under-18 girls’ and boys’ teams, highlighting the depth of young talent developing within the sport.

The competition opened with spirited matches among the Under-14 divisions, for both girls and boys.

One of the standout games of the day came in the Under-16 boys’ division, where Ha'alalo Peauma'a faced Mu’a Saints in a closely contested match. Neither side was able to establish a clear lead in the first half. The intensity carried into the second half, with both teams locked at 20 points each before Ha'alalo Peauma'a secured victory with a decisive goal kick, finishing 22–20. The fans in the crowd, including former rugby league players, praised the match for its competitiveness and exciting unpredictability.

The finals concluded with the Under-18 boys’ championship match between Ha'alalo Peauma'a and Ha'akame Broncos. Haakame Broncos claimed the title after a strong performance, while Ha'alalo Peauma'a put up a determined challenge throughout the game.

The competition forms part of the Tonga Rugby League Junior Pathways Development Program, an initiative aimed at creating opportunities for local athletes to gain international exposure and pursue pathways into higher levels of the sport. The program supports both boys and girls, offering pathways toward scholarships and potential professional rugby league careers.

Fiji in June

Following the 10-week competition, 20 Under-18 players will be selected to represent Tonga on an international tour to Fiji in June, where they are scheduled to compete against teams from Samoa and Fiji. The tour will have National Rugby League (NRL) scouts present, seeking emerging Pacific talent.

In addition, 20 players from the Under-16 girls and boys competitions, will travel to Sydney, Australia, for a development tour, also in June, providing further opportunities to train and compete in high-performance environments.

Now in its fourth year, the program continues to expand its reach and impact, supporting young athletes with access to training, facilities, and competitive experiences at an elite level.

The initiative is delivered through a partnership involving the Tonga Government, the Australian Government, PacificAus Sports, and the NRL, all contributing to the ongoing development of rugby league pathways in Tonga.
