Two men were arrested by Tonga Police on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, following reports of the alleged sale of methamphetamine.
The suspects, a 38-year-old man from Mapelu and a 31-year-old man from Fatai, were apprehended after officers responded to information received earlier that day.
Police said they acted swiftly on the report and located a vehicle in the Lomaiviti area believed to be linked to the alleged activity.
"Officers approached the vehicle and signalled for it to stop. However, the driver allegedly failed to comply and, in an attempt to evade police, collided with a police vehicle. A brief foot pursuit ensued, after which both individuals were apprehended. All necessary procedures were subsequently carried out at the scene," Tonga Police stated.
Authorities confirmed that drug paraphernalia and cash, suspected to be proceeds from illicit drug sales, were seized at the scene.
Both men have since been charged, and investigations into the matter are continuing.
"Tonga Police remain committed to combating the distribution of illicit drugs and safeguarding the community. Members of the public are requested to report any information relating to drug-related offences," stated the police.
