A grant valued at 400 million Japanese Yen (USD$ 2.65 million) for the implementation of solar power systems for the state-owned broadcaster, Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC,) was signed today between the Government of Japan and Tonga.

This Non-project Grant Assistance (NPGA) was signed by the Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, HE Inagaki Hisao, and Caretaker Prime Minister Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke, at the Prime Minister's Office in Nuku'alofa.

TBC is the sole public broadcasting entity in Tonga and with the rising costs of power generation, it has faced operational challenges that threatens the sustainability of its vital services.

HE Inagaki Hisao said, “Recognizing this, Japan is committed to supporting Tonga in enhancing its energy resilience through this solar power initiative with a grant of 400 million Japanese Yen, which is equivalent to USD 2.65 million. By providing a stable and sustainable energy source, we aim to reduce operational costs and ensure that TBC continue its critical work without interruption.”

This initiative also builds upon previous collaboration between the broadcaster and Japan under the "Nationwide Early Warning System and Strengthening Disaster Communications" project (NEWS project).

The signing ceremony was attended by high officials from the Embassy of Japan in Tonga, Chief Secretary & Secretary to Cabinet Mr. Paula Ma'u, the Acting CEO for TBC, Solomone Finau, and others.
