Two high-speed patrol boats were handed over by Japan to the Ministry of Customs and Revenue on Thursday, 2 October. The boats are designed to enhance maritime security and combat illegal smuggling of drugs into Tonga.

The Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, HE Mr. Inagaki Hisao, said that these boats is Japan’s method of helping Tonga respond to these issues.

"The challenge of illegal drug smuggling has posed a significant threat to the national security across the globe. Tonga is no exception. The alarming rise in such activities, particularly through maritime routes, underscores the urgent need for robust and effective countermeasures.”

The boats were funded USD $3 million through Japan’s Non-project Grant Assistance (NPGA) which includes other equipment.

Inspection equipment including trace detection system machines and a portable Raman spectrometer will also pe provided through this NPGA funding.

The Minister for Revenue and Customs Hon. Mateni Taupueluelu, thanked the Government of Japan for assisting the operational readiness of the Ministry.

The handover ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Hon. ‘Aisake Eke and relevant stakeholders, at the Masefield Naval Base of His Majesty’s Armed Forces, in Touliki.
