ENERGY COMMISSION
PUBLIC NOTICE
Government Lifeline Contribution to tariff at Tonga Power Ltd.
Effective from 1st October 2025
A significant increase in the regulated price of diesel has been approved by the Competent Authority effective 1 October 2025. This has contributed to a net increase of $0.14 seniti per litre (7.10%) as from June 2025 to September 2025.
As a result, this has increased the cost of fuel required for power generation by 7.22 seniti per kWh (8.5%) with the result that the total electricity tariff will increase from the current 84.94 seniti per kWh to 92.16 seniti per kWh.
The Government continued to subsidize the ‘Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’.
- The discounted tariff of 7.22 seniti/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of $0.9216 seniti/kWh, only to the power customers consuming more 150 kWh/month, to maintain the electricity tariff at 84.94 seniti/kWh.
- The discounted tariff of 22.16 seniti/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of $0.9216 seniti/kWh, only to the power customers consuming less 150 kWh/month, to maintain the electricity tariff at 70.00 seniti/kWh.
The Energy Commission has approved the ‘Government Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’ effective for the power consumption from 1st October 2025.
The revised tariff rates approved by the Energy Commission are as follows: -
NOTE: The Energy Tariff is regulated by the Energy Act 2021 and administered by the Energy Commission. A process set down in the Concession Agreement between Tonga Power Limited and the Energy (Electricity) Commission determines the tariff adjustment. The Competent Authority is the Tongan Government Agency whom sets the landed price of diesel which Tonga Power Limited uses for their power generation.
Respectfully, Energy Commission
