A new sports initiative for the Tongan deaf community was formally implemented yesterday, 2 October 2025.

Tonga Table Tennis Federation (TTTF) have partnered with the Tonga National Deaf Association (TNDA) to deliver a sports initiative that will benefit deaf youths in the country.

The initiative uses table tennis as a method of promoting physical activity, mental well-being, community engagement and education.

TNDA official, Lupe Punaivaha said, “For many in the deaf community, access to sport has been limited, this partnership opens doors not to just play, but to connect, learn and lead.”

The initiative is tailored to the needs of the deaf community including, inclusive coaching techniques which is supported by the International Table Tennis Federation and local advocates.

TTTF President Vili Ongosi, said this initiative is more than just playing a simple sport, it’s about ensuring that everyone regardless of ability, could play, grow and thrive.

The initiative is delivered under the Australian Aid funded program, ‘Smash Down Barriers Program’ collaborating with TTTF.

The program is focused on supporting sports development across the Pacific.
