Fiji secured their semi-final spot in the OFC-U19 Women’s Championship in Tahiti after defeating Tonga (2-1) on Sunday, 28 September.
The result not only secured Fiji into the semi-finals but also qualified the Cook Islands as runners-up, with Tonga finishing third.
Tonga needed to win against Fiji to stand any chance of progressing in the championship.
Early on the first half, Fiji’s captain Serena Naweni and Elesi Tabunase scored two back-to-back goals.
Fiji maintained their defense effectively until the end of the match to secure their win.
Although Tonga’s Anela Makaafi scored a goal for Tonga towards the end of the second half, it wasn’t enough to save them before full time.
The match resulted in Tonga placing third in the group match which means they have to settle for the 5th place play-off match.
