In line with industry practices, a cash handling fee will be applied to cash deposits and cash withdrawals.

BSP is making substantial investments to enhance our customers’ ability to manage their physical cash needs. These investments include the deployment of advanced cash counting machines throughout our branch network. We are also procuring 15 new ATMs which will be progressively installed across Tonga Islands by 2027. All these ATMs will feature modern capabilities, including deposit-taking functionality in select locations.

To address the increasing costs of cash handling, BSP will introduce a Cash Handling Fee of 1% of the cumulative cash deposits or cash withdrawals effective from 7th July 2025 if:

• total deposits to an account equal or exceed TOP 20,000 during a business day.
• total withdrawals from an account equal or exceed TOP 20,000 during a business day.

This fee will be applicable across all branches, with exemptions of government entities and registered non-profit organisations including churches and schools.

While the new fee will help to cover the significant cost of handling, processing, securing, and transporting large cash transactions, it will also have the following benefits:

• Promoting Digital Channels: Encouraging the use of safer, more efficient digital platforms like internet Banking and EFTPOS to enhance customer convenience.
• Improving Branch Efficiency: reducing branch congestion and long queues by shifting transactions to digital channels, allowing staff to focuson customers needing personalised assistance.
