A state-of-the-art medical waste treatment unit at Vaiola Hospital in Nuku'alofa, was commissioned by the Australian High Commission and Tonga’s Ministry of Health on 3 April. The Vaiola Hospital Ecosteryl Unit will allow hazardous and infectious materials to be disposed of in a safe, sustainable way.

The Minister for Health, Hon. Dr ‘Ana ‘Akau’ola emphasized the significant environmental and health impacts of the project. “This unit is more than just an installation, it is a symbol of our shared commitment to safeguarding public health and protecting our environment for future generations." she said in expressing her gratitude for Australia’s steadfast support to Tonga.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Tonga, HE Mr. Brek Batley, said “Australia continues to invest in better health care for Tongans and in high-quality, resilient, infrastructure to support the hardworking staff at the hospital”.

The need for an upgraded waste treatment unit was identified during the COVID-19 pandemic when personal protection equipment, vaccination drives and quarantine measures generated higher volumes of medical waste. Australia has installed new medical treatment units in ‘Eua and Vava’u hospitals since 2022, bringing the total investment to $4.2 million pa'anga.

Funded through Australia’s Vaccine Access and Health Security Initiative (VAHSI), this cutting-edge microwave incinerator technology not only neutralizes medical waste but also aligns with international best practices for environmentally friendly healthcare.

The Australian Government’s support for Tonga’s healthcare system is underpinned by shared goals of public health, sustainability, and resilience.
