Ha'apai and Niuas remain dengue free as cases rise in Tonga [1]

The Ha'apai and Niuas groups remain dengue free as cases rise in Vava'u, Tongatapu, and ‘Eua. Today, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 21 new cases with positive rapid test, bringing up the total cumulative dengue fever (DF) cases to 215, with 113 cases in Vava'u, 71 cases in Tongatapu, and 31 cases in ‘Eua.

There are total of 12 cases currently hospitalized: seven at Prince Ngu hospital, three at Niu’eiki hospital, and two at Vaiola. All cases are in stable condition, MOH stated.

The youngest age affected is a 7 months old baby boy.

The age group mostly affected is 10-19 years old.

Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) is the responsible virus for this current outbreak in Tonga.

Response activities

The Ministry of Health is conducting ongoing case investigation and vector control in hot spots and high risk areas, and awareness programs to communities including the GMS Folaha, GMS Havelu and Mo’unga’olive College in Tongatapu; and also Makave Tokaikolo Church, and Church of Tonga Quarterly Meeting in Vava’u.

A clean-up campaign continues in Vava’u in the central district: Leimatu’a, Feletoa, Mataika, Holonga, ‘Utui, and Okoa, to destroy mosquite breeding sites in the community.

MOH recommendations

1. Continue to clean up and destroy mosquito breeding sites around the home and schools.
2. Wear appropriate clothing to minimize mosquito bites.
3. Use mosquito nets and repellents such as lotion and spray.
4. If you are sick, watch out for severe symptoms and seek medical attention immediately.

No dengue-related deaths have been reported to date.

In it't latest daily dengue report, the Ministry acknowledged the ongoing support from the people and communities, government Ministries and NGOs, and stakeholders, as well as continuous technical supports from WHO and UNICEF.
