Editor,

In response to a recent letter regarding Nautilus Minerals we wish to correct a few assertions put forward in the article Silence is Golden.

First and foremost, Nautilus Minerals is committed to developing projects in a manner that respects and protects the local environment, and which accommodates local input.

While we believe there is great potential for economic mineral deposits to be found in the Tongan territorial waters, additional exploration is necessary before we can determine the size or value. To date, we have not applied for permits to mine, and there are no current plans to begin undersea mining operations in the Kingdom.

Seafloor mineral exploration consists of sonar, electromagnetic and other non-invasive electronic surveys, surface sampling and eventually drilling. These operations have minimal impact on the seabed or ocean ecosystems.

If the exploration program provides positive results, Nautilus Minerals will apply for a mining license from the Tonga Government. Approval of the license will require that Nautilus Minerals complete a detailed environmental impact assessment , extensive public consultation and review.

Responsible exploration and development is a priority for Nautilus Minerals. We are committed to the highest environmental standards throughout our operations and wish to engage with members of the community in and open, honest and transparent dialogue at each stage of our development.

In this regard, we encourage individuals to contact us directly to address any questions or concerns.

Regards,

ScottĀ Trebilcock
