Dr. William Lavemai, a 30-year-old medical doctor from Kolofo'ou, has died from injuries received in a car crash on Vaha'akolo Road in Vaololoa on Sunday, 26 January.
The 30-year-old doctor was driving a blue sedan traveling southward, and reportedly swerved off his track and collided with another vehicle traveling northbound from the opposite direction.
Tonga Police reporrted that their preliminary investigation suspected heavy intoxication and failure to wear a seatbelt were factors that caused the fatality.
The driver and passengers in the other vehicle sustained minor injuries, thanks to their use of seatbelts, Tonga Police reported. They have received medical treatment.
Tonga Police reminded the public of the critical importance of wearing seatbelts. "This simple yet life-saving measure reduces the risk of serious injuries or fatalities. We advise the public to always adhere to road safety rules, avoid driving under the influence, and buckle up every time you are on the road. Seatbelts save lives!"
