An intention to move a Motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister, Hon. Hu'akavameiliku (Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni) was submitted by Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke in a group of 10 members of parliament, on Saturday, 23 November, the Speaker's office confirmed this morning.

The offfice of the Lord Speaker stated that a “Notice of Intention to Move a Motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni” was submitted by the Representative of the People of Tongatapu 5, Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke, together with the Motion, which had been signed in support by 10 Members of Parliament, including Dr Eke.

“The Office of the Legislative Assembly are carrying out tasks in respect of the motion as is required by clause 50B of the Constitution as well as the Rules of Procedures of the House. More information will be provided on the stages to follow in parliamentary proceedings on the motion,” Chief Clerk stated.

This is the second Motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister, during his first term in office.

A previous Motion for a Vote of No Confidence was voted down in the House by elected members (11-for and 14- against [2]) in September 2023. There are 26 seats in Tonga's Legislative Assembly. The Noble's Representatives have nine seats and the People's Representatives have 17. There are also two appointed Cabinet ministers who can't vote in a Vote of no Confidence.
