Royal Tombs perimeter improvements funded by China [1]

A project to improve the perimeter of the Royal Tombs in Nuku'alofa, funded by China, was launched this morning, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by HM Queen Nanasipau’u, with HSH Prince Kalaniuvalu, HSH Prince Tu’ipelehake, Hon. Fatafehi Lapaha Tuita, and Lord Fakafanua.
In June 2023, Tonga and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Royal Tombs improvement project.
The improvements will include a new fence, a garden, and two public parking lots on Vaha’akolo Road and Taufa’ahau Road.
The first parking area on Taufa'ahau Road is set to be complete in June this year, 2024.
Under the plan, sidewalks will be built around the Royal Tombs fence for public use, and a bus station at Mateialona Rd, for public use and, especially for students.
The Ministry of Infrastructure stated that the building materials were expected to arrive in Tonga next week, and the work would begin then.
The Construction Quality Executives Council (CQEC) in September 2022, was responsible for the design of the project.
Meanwhile, the China Jiangsu International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group, LTD (CJI) was awarded the contract, by the Embassy of China in Tonga.
The China Jiangsu International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group Ltd is partnering with the Ministry of Infrastructure on this project.
