Tonga Police is increasing the number of driving instructors to help recruits become competent drivers.
A one-week Driver Training Instructor's Course for ten police members was completed on Friday, 22 December.
The training was facilitated by three Police Driving Instructors, Acting Inspector Tevita Likiliki, Acting Inspector Sekona Vi, and Acting Chief Inspector Uraia Palu. The three have been certified driving instructors since 2012, through the help of the New Zealand Police.
Police Commissioner Shane McLennan stated, “driving is a basic skill for a police officer and instead of relying on the new recruits to know how to drive when they first join us, we stand ready to provide that skill as part of their recruitment program.”
Expanding the numbers of Police driving instructors is a deliberate move by the Tonga Police to support the inclusion of the driving training in its recruitment program.
Participants were selected from various units within Tonga Police who hold a clean driving record with 5+ years of driving experience within the organisation, and are very competent in driving automatic and manual vehicles.
