Tonga Police say man arrested for “serious crime” is “political activist” [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Sunday, November 19, 2023 - 19:10.  Updated on Sunday, November 19, 2023 - 19:23.

A 54 year old man from Ha'ateiho, Tongatapu, described by Tonga Police as “a political activist” was arrested yesterday afternoon, on a charge of attempted murder.

Tonga Police stated this afternoon, Sunday 19 November, that, “our investigation has revealed substantial evidence linking the suspect to a serious crime.”

“We are actively pursuing additional charges,” Police stated.

Details of the arrest charge were not spelled out in their Release, headlined “Tonga Police Arrest of Political Activist for Attempted Murder.”

They suggested the “serious crime” was related to social media commentary.

“Tonga Police is urging the public to refrain from making any further comments or engaging in activities on social media that could jeopardize the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Any actions or statements that incite violence, promote hatred, or compromise the safety of individuals will not be tolerated and will be investigated for potential prosecutions.

“Tonga Police also takes this opportunity to remind all users of social media, that no matter where you are geographically located, you can be prosecuted for offences of using social media in an abusive capacity. Tonga Police is a member of INTERPOL, and we work cooperatively with our law enforcement colleagues all around the world to gather evidence and support each other with investigations and prosecutions.”

It was also not clear whether or not the investigation was related to any complaints.

Police Commissioner Shane McLennan, told Matangi Tonga tonight that: “further details will be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.”

He said the words "political activist” were not intended to be part of the charge or crime. “No, it is just who the man purports to be and has been for many years. A very active member on social media for years; not a politician or a journalist.”

“This is all we have for the moment,” said Commissioner McLennan.
