World Rugby's number one, Ireland, ran in eight tries to thrash the ‘Ikale Tahi 59 – 16 at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Saturday night (Sunday morning Tonga time).
Ill-discipline, poor lineouts and handling errors constantly disrupted the ‘Ikale Tahi throughout the game.
Vaea Fifita scored Tonga’s only try at the end of the second half.
Flyhalf William Havili was a standout player for Tonga, converting all of his penalty attempts, including a goal from nearly 50 meters out.
Ireland’s Rob Herring and Bundee Aki scored doubles, while Johnny Sexton made history when his try in the first half made him the highest points scorer in Irish Rugby.
Coming into the Rugby World Cup competion, the 'Ikale Tahi ranked 15th in World Rugby.
Over the next three weeks in Pool B competition Tonga will be tested by Scotland no. 5, South Africa no. 2 and Romania no.19.
