Tonga Police warn public of crime spike in 2023 [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, August 30, 2023 - 10:07.  Updated on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 - 10:12.

Crime is spiking in Tonga this year, according to new statistics released by Tonga Police, who warn the public to watch out for housebreaking and thefts, fake online car dealers and vehicle thefts.

Tongan tapa cloth and mats and electronic devices are the main targets of thefts, while vehicle thefts are on the rise, and online scammers are targeting vulnerable people through social media.

Housebreaking increased by 29 percent, from 193 cases reported in the seven months from January-July 2022 to 248 cases reported for the same period in 2023.

At the same time reported Thefts increased by 18.7 percent, from 268 to 318.

Obtaining money or property by false pretenses increased by 275%, from 12 cases to 45 cases from January to July.

“Tonga Police advise the public to be on the lookout for these preventable crimes and to seek Police assistance immediately if [they] encounter any,” the Tonga Police Crime Watch reported.

“We recognize the continuous spike in Housebreaking and Thefts, particularly with precious possessions such as Tongan tapas and mats, which jointly with electronic devices are the main targets of thefts.

“Always make sure that someone is at home, or let your neighbours know when you leave your home. It will greatly help, if you can afford it, to install a security camera in your abode.”

Fake online car dealers

The police warned the public to be cautious of online car dealers and not to make any deposits.

“We have received numerous reports of scammers targeting vulnerable people through social media who later claim to lose a fortune over these fake claims.

“We urge members of the public to contact Police if unsure of online sellers before conducting any transactions. Look out for and avoid deals that look too good to be true and seek help from a reliable person before you carry out transactions online.”

Vehicle thefts

Vehicle thefts are on the rise in Tonga and the police warn the public not to leave their keys in the ignition or leave the engine running when the driver leaves the car.

They said lawbreakers are watching for an opportunity to steal vehicles.

“Sadly, in most cases, these stolen vehicles are quickly dismantled or re-painted and it might take a while to discover them.

“It is always wise to do prevention first, where you should always lock your vehicle and take the keys with you wherever you go,” the Police warned.
