The Heilala festivities started with a Best Floral Arrangement competition on Monday, at Ancient Tonga in Fangaloto, Tongatapu
Although the theme was, “Celebrating Life & Love through the art of florestry” the first judging session was for the arrangement of a coffin spray or wreath for a funeral.
In the second session, contestants had to create a floral cascade or bridal flowers for a wedding.
Nine contestants presented their creativity and eye-catching flowers, most bringing flowers from their own backyards and gardens.
Contestant Viliami Fotofili, expressed his appreciation for flower arrangements, especially at this time of the year where there are many events and celebrations going on. "Due to the cold weather, flowers hardly bloom, and I have to use the only available materials I can get my hands on, such as coconut leaves, dried flowers, and green leaves."
The prize for the Best Floral Arrangement went to Milise Vaiangina of Hule Florests with a prize of TOP$800.
The panel of judges were Mr ‘Uliti Palu (‘Uliti Palu Florist), Mrs. Heimoana Ali (Suli Vana Garden), Ms. Tupou Panuve (Bunny’s Backyard), and Mrs. Magdalena Fifita (Director, IED).
Hon Frederica Tuita, CEO of Tourism Viliami Takau, and the reigning Miss Heilala, Yehenara Soukop, attended.
