Assistance of AUD2.8 million (TOP 4.3 million) was committed by Australia to support Tonga Police's critical role in providing a safe, secure and crime free community, while addressing critical resourcing gaps.

After a request from the Government of Tonga, the support was formalised on 19 May in a signing ceremony between Minister for Finance, Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti and the Australian High Commissioner, HE Rachael Moore, attended by Police Commissioner, Shane McLennan in Nuku'alofa.

Australia will provide direct the AUD2.8 million for Tonga Police's priorities, including maritime police capability, information and case management systems, custody facilities, uniforms, and equipment.

Australia's High Commissioner Moore said, Australia is committed to supporting the Government and people of Tonga’s priorities and has a long term and highly valued partnership with Tonga Police.

“I am proud to commit an additional AUD2.8 million to Tonga Police to assist their critical work protecting the safety and security of Tonga’s communities.”

Minister Tiueti welcomed the support to one of Tonga’s priorities in policing and security.

“I recognise the important work that Tonga Police is progressing and look forward to seeing achievements because of this funding commitment.”

Police Commissioner Shane McLennan said this funding allows Tonga Police to address critical resourcing gaps that will make their workplaces safe and also ensure they are able to deliver the policing service that Tonga deserves.

“Making our police cells and central watchhouse safe for prisoners and staff is fundamental to ensuring Tonga Police comply with human rights obligations. Providing Tonga Police with a fit-for-purpose water policing capability, along with essential technology, uniforms, and equipment, will assist us in professionalising our service."

He said Tonga Police is extremely grateful to the Australian Government for this and other on-going capability support.

Meanwhile, this announcement builds on Australia’s longstanding cooperation with Tonga Police, which includes the Australian Federal Police supported policing partnership and Families Free of Violence initiative.
