A ‘Save our Seeds’ training was held for farmers and agricultural representatives this week in the launch of a 'Pacific Seeds for Life' program that aims at achieving food security in Tonga.
The three-day training, which started on 15 May, aimed to upskill the various representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF), private sector, NGOs, farmers and Hango Agriculture College in quality seed production practices, with representatives from the Pacific Community (SPC) and Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research of New Zealand.
Pacific Seeds for Life (PS4L) initiative brings together governments, international research organisations, the private sector, communities, and farmers with a goal to create robust and resilient seed systems.
New Zealand supports Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research to work with SPC on training and investments in seed production and storage facilities to improve the quality of planting material and enhance climate resilience and food security.
Attending the launch was the First Secretary-Development at the New Zealand High Commission, Olivia Philpott and other guests at MORDI Tonga Trust.
