Revd. objects to crude call for prayers to guide the king [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, October 1, 2007 - 20:51.  Updated on Sunday, June 15, 2014 - 19:43.

Highlights from Tonga's newspapers, September 26-27, 2007. An English translation summary by Tevita Fonua.

The Kele'a on September 26 reports that the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga will conduct prayers on November 9, loosely aimed at steering the King away from profligate living. The church's director of Christian education Rev. Dr. Taliai Niumeitolu, objected to the wording saying that it is too crude. But the Kele'a denounced Rev. Niumeitolu's concern, as being obsequious to the authorities.

According to the Taimi on September 24, Samani Sekona of Fo'ui was shocked when he learned that his name is in the petition that was tabled in parliament by 'Akilisi Pohiva. To his knowledge, he is the only Samani Sekona in Tonga, but what ached him most is that he does not even subscribe to the oft-repeated expression, that "this is what the people want."

The Talaki on September 26 reports that charges for port services, including those associated with the loading and unloading of containers, have been raised by as much as 100%. According to Ports Authority CEO Commander Lupeti Vi, the increased levies will pay for the maintenance and upgrade of the wharf. But businesswoman 'Ofa Simiki, who described the new charges as exorbitant, said that businesses are now caught between being fair to customers, the need to survive, and catering to the demands of the Ports Authority.

The Kalonikali on September 27 reports that the contingent of Tongan marines replaces US soldiers in guarding Al Faw palace, the headquarters of the multinational force in Iraq. According to Brigadier 'Uta'atu, the marines deployment constitutes Tonga's contribution to the global war on terror.
