Peioneti Lui graduated with a Master in Agricultural Science from the Graduate School of Agro-Environmental Science, Tokyo University of Agriculture on 30 March.
Upon returning to Tonga, he resumed his job as a Quarantine Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forest (MAFF).
JICA Tonga stated that his study program was under JICA’s SDG’s Global Leader Program and his research was on 'Effects of Coconut Charcoal in Soil Physical Properties and Corn (Zea Maize) Performance'.
He found out that by mixing coconut charcoal with soil, it can retain water and keep the soil moist for a longer period of time. This method can be utilized by farmers during drought seasons as it can still yield a good harvest to supply the market and at the same time save water.
The SDGs Global Leader was established in 2019 to promote cooperation for sustainable development in the world, under the framework of JICA Development Studies Program (JICA-DSP).
The course is intended to provide participants with special program on Japanese developmental experience and internships if necessary, in addition to obtaining Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD. degree.
Lui's program first started online training on 1 April 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but he traveled to Japan in August 2021.
He made a courtesy visit to Mr. Hiroaki Takashima, Resident Representative of JICA Tonga Office in Nuku’alofa last week.
