Driver charged after 'Eua teen struck by vehicle [1]

A teenager who was struck by a vehicle on a road in 'Eua last week sustained injuries to his face and chest, Tonga Police reported today. They have arrested a 71-year-old driver on charges related to a reckless hit-and-run accident.
Police in ‘Eua on Thursday, 22 December 2022 at around 1:30pm received a report from the Niu’eiki Hospital of an injured 15-year-old male from ‘Ohonua, ‘Eua, who was struck by a vehicle on public road.
“Police responded and arrested the driver, a 71-year-old male from Houma village for reckless hit-and-run. The victim was on foot and was crossing the road at ‘Ohonua when he got hit by the vehicle, which was heading in the Northern direction.
The victim sustained injuries to his face and chest. Police said that he was discharged from hospital, following examination by the doctor who recommended for the victim to undergo x-ray in Tongatapu.
Police are investigating the incident and urged drivers to drive responsibly, “especially in this holiday season where roads are busy and crowded. Be cautious for your safety and the safety of other road users to avoid causing unnecessary harm to yourself and or others,” Police stated.
