Tree planting to restore the ecosystem at Ha'atafu Beach on western Tongatapu was held on 12 November to coincide with COP 27.
Australian High Commissioner, HE Rachael Moore was joined by community members of Kolovai and Kanokupolu for the tree planting.
This reforestation project aims to restore the coastal ecosystem, following the devastating disaster on 15 January and to promote a resilient Tonga, which is aligned with the climate goals of COP 27.
HE Moore said, “Australia is deeply committed to climate action and we thank the communities for allowing us to partner with you on this project to demonstrate this commitment which will see 700 trees be planted in the Kanokupolu and Ha’atafu coastal areas”. This includes coconut trees, shrubs and a variety of fruit trees, which will also help improve the soil stability at Ha’atafu and Kanokupolu.
The reforestation project is funded by Australia through the Direct Aid Program, under the climate change and environment priority.
