Ha'apai girls encouraged to participate in women's football [1]

Football coaches and referees in Ha'apai attended an OFC Capacity Building workshop with a focus on Women’s Football, conducted by the Tonga Football Association for its stakeholders on 12-14 October in Pangai.
Particpants came from Lifuka (Pangai Hihifo and Pangai Ha’apai), Vahe Foa ( Fangale’ounga, Fotua, Lotofoa, Faleloa) and women in football from Ha’ano and Felemea islands.
The Oceania Football Confederation stated they are building the foundations of Women’s Football in the Pacific to enhance the quality of life of girls and women throughout the region.
Tonga Football Association's Women in Football Division is led by ‘Atelaite Tu’ivailala, who urged the people of Ha’apai to be proactive in the game.
She said football is a tool to empower women, not only in football but also as individuals in their own communities.
‘Ana Uaafe Veikoso, Principal of Ha’apai High School, who is the Acting Governor of Ha'apai, supported the participants representing the Ha’apai Veu Football Association.
She said the Ministry of Education had supported the ‘Just Play’ programs for children, including the FIFA-'WASH' hands program launched in 2021, during the pandemic lock down.
‘Just Play’ is a social development programme for children aged 6 to 12 years old. It helps children learn, grow and explore football in a positive and meaningful way.
Meanwhile, similar capacity building workshops have been held in Tongatapu, Vava'u, Ha'apai, with 'Eua next.
