Three asphalt distributor trucks to assist Tonga's road construction works were handed over to the Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku from the Government of Japan, today, 20 October.

Japanese Ambassador H.E. Munenaga Kensaku said due to the double disasters caused by COVID-19, and the volcanic eruption and tsunami, he was relieved that these trucks were finally handed over to the Prime Minister.

He said the trucks were provided to promote Tonga’s economic growth through their Non-Project Grant Aid.

The total value of this aid at around USD1 million divided into two batches. This first batch contains the trucks and the second batch will provide two vibratory rollers by next year. These vehicles would be very useful for road maintenance and improvement of our society, said the Ambassador.

"We all agree that roads are basic needs and very important infrastructure, which is necessary to various aspects of our lives as well as a basis for development.

“I believe it will help the Tongan Government to do good maintenance for its main roads and contribute to the wellbeing of the people of Tonga, as well as the economic development of this Kingdom. I also believe the Ministry of Infrastructure will not only effectively utilize them but will also take good care of these vehicles through good maintenance."

The Prime Minister extended Tonga's gratitude to the Government of Japan for this assistance, which had been longstanding in our strong partnership.

"We deeply appreciate the handover of Japan’s general grant aid of three units of asphalt distributor trucks, one set of spare parts, and 27 spare tires to assist Tonga’s road construction program. This will greatly contribute to the quality of our roads and towards Tonga’s resilience and sustainable development.”

The handover was held at the Fa'onelua Convention Centere, in Nuku'alofa.
