Japan and Tonga talk defence cooperation [1]

In a statement from Japan’s Ministry of Defense, said the two Ministers exchanged views on regional issues and confirmed further enhancement of bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges, and to cooperate closely.
Minister Kishi said in last year’s Japan Pacific Islands Defense Dialogue, they held frank exchanges of opinion on the common challenges in the region, and re-expressed his gratitude for Tonga’s support.
He was also grateful for Tonga’s support to grant the observer status to Japan in the South Pacific Defence Ministers’ Meeting.
The Minister also extended his heartfelt sympathy on the damages caused by the volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga in January 2022.
He said international emergency relief activities were extended to Tonga conducted by the Self-Defense Forces.
Hon. Hu’akavameiliku extended Tonga's gratitude for Japan's support, including the international emergency relief activities by the Self-Defense Forces.
He also expressed his message of codependences for the passing of former Prime Minister Abe.
Hon. Hu’akavameiliku is also the Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces (HMAF).
