Water tanks project commissioned on Niuafo’ou [1]

A Niuafo’ou Water Tank project was commissioned in 'Esia on 30 June, after 168 tanks were to the remote outer island in northern Tonga.
The tanks were distributed to nine communities, three Government schools and government buildings.
The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for MEIDECC Hon. Poasi Tei commissioned the project, attended by Government Representative for Niua 17, Vatau Hui, the CEO for MEIDECC, Paula Ma’u, and others.
The NWTP was co-funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Tindall Foundation and worth NZ$565,000.
The Acting PM said this would assist in solving the problem with Niuafo’ou facing with water shortages, due to climate change.
He expressed government's sincere gratitude to the Government of New Zealand and Tindall Foundation for this support.
Niuafo'ou's Government representative, Bob Taylor extended their gratitude on behalf of all in Niuafo’ou, also known as the Tin Can Mail.
The Principal of Niuafo’ou High School, Losaline Taufalele, thanked the New Zealand High Commissioner, H.E Matt Howell for their country’s generosity and to MEIDECC for reaching out with the water tanks.
The people of Niuafo’ou are very vulnerable to drought, in addition to their isolation from the main island and the provision of core services by the government.
Giving them the chance to access clean drinking water, with the water tank project is a step forward in the development of this island group, stated the Department of Climate Change under MEIDECC.
Meanwhile, more projects are being sought to facilitate the needs of people in Niuafo'ou.
