In Tonga, the price of petrol will decrease, while kerosene and diesel increases start from Wednesday, 18 May. 

The Competent Authority (TCA) approved the new retail petroleum prices for May-June.

• Petrol decreases from $3.88 to $3.83 per litre (by 5 seniti) 
• Kerosene increases from $3.06 to $3.10 per litre, (by 4 seniti)
• Diesel increases from $4.03 to $4.18 per litre, (by 15 seniti). 


The Competent Authority said today that the local petroleum prices mid-May to mid-June 2022 were due to unfavourable movements noted in international prices for all refined products that is for petrol (ULP), kerosene (DPK) and diesel (ADO) as well as international freight rates. 

They stated that pressure on crude oil prices from geopolitical issues, including the war in the Ukraine continued during the month of April. Various fundamentals, including the impact of sanctions on Russia and the OPEC+ response to the crisis were pulling markets back to the upside, partially offsetting lower demand from China’s recent lockdown. On a month average basis, the Dated Brent crude price for April was USD 105.92/bbl (down by 5.8% on the March average). 

Maritime freight rates had increased by 11.9%, as the shipping industry had been affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Tongan pa’anga has been steady. 

These factors combined resulted had variable impact on products prices, said TCA.
