Japanese Ambassador HE Mr Kensaku Munenaga made the handover to the Minister of Health Hon Dr Saia Piukala, at Vaiola Hospital.
“This boat will be utilized to deliver COVID-19 vaccines as well as other critical health services to those who live in outer islands. Considering the geographical conditions of Tonga, everybody would understand how useful it is,” he said.

The gift is part of the UNICEF’s Cold Chain project funded by Japan’s Emergency Grant Aid. Under this project, the Government of Japan has already provided five Hilux vehicles to Tonga in December 2021.
"Having more than 70% of the population well vaccinated, Tonga is presenting a very impressive case to Pfizer and AstraZeneca as of the effectivity of their products. In the history of the struggle with COVID-19, I think the case of Tonga may provide a very good example."
The Ambassador also thanked UNICEF for their continuous cooperation with Japan and Embassy, especially in organizing and completing this project.
Dr Piukala expressed gratitude for the generous donation from the people and Government of Japan, when Tonga most needs it, saying: "It’s a symbol of good friendship of the two countries."
He said the boat will effectively be used in the roll out in the outer islands.
