Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, April 6, 2022 - 17:37

Prime Minister Hon Hu'akavameiliku announcing the eased restrictions for Tongatapu and Vava'u during a press conference. 6 April 2022.

Lockdown restrictions for Tongatapu and Vava’u will ease further over the next two weeks starting on Saturday, April 9, with businesses allowed to operate from Monday to Saturday from 5:00am to 8:00pm.

The Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku said the eased restrictions followed a decrease in daily COVID-19 cases over the last week.

During a virtual press conference this morning, he reported that over the last 24 hours, 143 COVID-19 new cases were recorded, with the total number of active cases dropping to 1,969 while 5,541 people had recovered from the virus.

“We are satisfied the new case numbers have decreased mainly because everyone is abiding by COVID-19 protocols directed by the Ministry of Health especially wearing masks and social distancing,” he said.

The night-time curfew will be moved to 8:00pm to 5:00am during the two weeks.

Outdoor sports such as golf, tennis, and pickle ball are also permitted.

Women’s koka’anga groups are also allowed to gather to work on crafts while practising social distancing and wearing masks. They will be monitored by police and health authorities and if they are observed not following COVID-19 protocols, they will be closed down.

Churches are also allowed to hold services on Easter Friday and Easter Sunday but must ensure their congregations adhere to COVID-19 protocols such as wearing masks and social distancing.

Meanwhile, Ha’apai will remain on the current red alert lockdown level with businesses only opening on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays.

COVID-19 vaccination

So far, 98% of the target population over the age of 12 have received their first doses, 90% have received their second doses, while 50% have received their booster shots in Tonga.

The Niuas will receive their booster shots along with the COVID-19 vaccines for 5 to 11-year-olds, which are expected to arrive this month.

COVID-19 vaccination programs are continuing to roll-out in Tonga.
