A possibility that Tonga’s shellfish, Kaloa’a, and reef fish may be contaminated and inedible following the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption has been a major concern for the CEO for the Ministry of Fisheries, Dr Tu’ikolongahau Halafihi.

Dr Halafihi said that he had collected samples and contacted his New Zealand counterparts for the possibility of carrying out testing here, but now we will need to send the samples to be tested in New Zealand.

“We are ready to forward reef fish and shellfish to be tested in New Zealand,” he said.

However, he said there is no shortage of fish products for local consumption.

“There is no problem with deep sea fish, such as Palu and others”.

He said that there is ample deep-sea fish on the market, “and they have dropped the prices”.
