Two men are in police custody after arrests related to breaking into churches and theft of Tongan mats, tapa and decorations.
Tonga Police arrested a 21-year-old from Pili, on 1 December, on six different charges related to housebreaking and theft from fale lotu and he was expected to appear at a lower court this week.
A second man was arrested on Wednesday December 8. The 33-year-old from Kolofo'ou remained in custody, charged as a co-offender related to driving a vehicle.
Deputy Police Commissioner Tevita Vailea said that an investigation was continuing and more break-in charges of a similar nature may be made.
“Some cases have not formally lodged complaints,” he said.
The Police have seized stolen items valued at $30,000, and he expected more to be located.
The accused men were apprehended during a police operation that included forensics investigators and crime scene examination.
“We warn the general public to be more vigilant with their belongings and to report to the Police immediately any suspicious activity,” he said.
