A 7,000 litre water tanker was handed over to the Tonga Fire and Emergency Services donated from Japan, today, December 1.
Funded with a grant of USD$63,417 provided through Japan's ongoing Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr. Kensaku Munenaga, hoped this water tanker would contribute to better and more effective services in fire emergencies, by promoting the mobility of the Fire and Emergency Services.
"In the aftermath of natural disasters, such as cyclones, this water tanker will also quickly deliver essential water sources to vulnerable people," he said.
The large tank on the truck was donated by one of Japan’s cities, Isehara, while the truck itself was donated by Kansai Airports. The procurement, maintenance and transportation of the equipment was by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy, he said.
"The Tonga Fire and Emergency Services is a very important organization for bettering and securing Tongan people’s lives. I believe, well equipped with necessary facilities and equipment, the Fire and Emergency Services will fulfill their responsibilities and live up to the people’s expectations."
Prime Minister Hon Rev. Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa expressed gratitude to Japan for its ready help. He said all fire appliances across Tonga's six stations are donations to the services.
“Perhaps one of our most limiting constraints is the lack of a constant water source throughout Tonga. Where a water source is not available, we rely heavily on our fire applicances, particularly our tankers to carry water to a fire scene."
The PM said there was a long term plan to address the lack of water but the urgent need for fire appliances still remained.
