Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, October 25, 2021 - 20:40

Tonga's Health State of Emergency continues while COVID-19 vaccinations roll-out. Nuku'alofa, 25 October 2021.

Tonga’s Health State of Emergency has been renewed for another month to prevent the spread of COVID-19, starting from 8:00pm today until 8:00pm November 22, the Prime Minister announced.

The Health State of Emergency was first declared by the PM Hon. Rev Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa on March 12, 2020 under the Emergency Management Act.

Since then, it has been renewed on a monthly basis, and enforced by Tonga Police and His Majesty's Armed Forces.

The Prime Minister stated that the renewal of the emergency powers was still necessary to prevent the loss of human life, due to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 worldwide.

Meanwhile, the national night-time curfews still applies from midnight to 5:00am.
