'Ikale Tahi won the battle but lost the war [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, June 4, 2007 - 18:49.  Updated on Friday, June 13, 2014 - 19:52.

Tonga won the battle but lost the war to the Japanese, when the 'Ikale Tahi was beaten by the Japanese 20-17 at Coffs Harbour, Australia on Saturday June 2.

The 'Ikale Tahi scored more tries three to two, but the Japanese were more successful with their goal conversions to bring in the points. The 'Ikale Tahi was so unlucky in their final attack that the pass to 'Aisea Havili was too high and he could not catch the ball. The 'Ikale Tahi's try scorers were, 'Isileli Tupou, Hudson Tonga'uiha and Vungakoto Lilo. The goal kicker was Fangatapu 'Apikotoa.

The Japanese victory was their first ever in a Pacific Cup Tournament, and it secured them at fifth place after the second week-ends of the 2007 Pacific Nations Cup Tournament. Tonga is at the bottom of the table at No. 6.

It appeared that the 'Ikale Tahi have not fully recovered after being thrashed by Australian A 60-15 in their first outing, the weekend before. The highest score so far during this year's Pacific Nations Cup tournament.

The 'Ikale Tahi, 'iT will be facing an up-hill battle to win any game during the rest of the tournament. The 'IT next three games are all very tough games.

The 'Ikale will meet the Junior All Blacks at Teufaiva, Nuku'alofa this Saturday, June 9; then the Fijians at Lautoka on June 16, and finally against the Manu Samoa at Apia on June 23.

The Manu Samoa was beaten 27-15 by Australian A at Coffs Harbour, last Saturday

The Fijian was also beaten 57-8 by the Junior All Black at Suva, on Satuday.

The Point Table after the second week of the tournament, the Junior All Black is leading, followed by Australian A. The Manu Samoa is in third place, Fiji is in Four, Japan in fifth, and the 'Ikale Tahi in sixth place.
