Tonga's State of Emergency renewed [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, August 2, 2021 - 17:08

Fua'amotu International Airport. 2021.

Tonga’s State of Emergency has been renewed for another month to prevent the spread of COVID-19, starting from 8:00pm today, August 2 until 8:00pm August 30.

The State of Emergency was first declared by the Prime Minister, Hon. Rev Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa on March 12, 2020 under the Emergency Management Act.

For the last 17 months, it has been renewed on a monthly basis, and enforced by Tonga Police and His Majesty's Armed Forces.

The renewal for the emergency powers is still necessary so as to prevent the loss of human life due to the spread of the coronavirus worldwide, said the PM.

Meanwhile, the national restrictions remain the same, including the night-time curfew from 12 midnight to 5:00am.
