Students and teachers from the FWC Primary School WASH Club in Nukunuku presented messages around water, sanitation, and hygiene in the form of art and songs today, Tuesday 27 July.
The school is one of 10 schools in the Hihifo District tasked with presenting what they have learned this week under the WASH project.
The activities focused mainly on washing hands, cleaning the bathroom, and picking up rubbish. Parents, teachers, and community members as well as Live & Learn staff attended a demonstration of newly learned skills.
The WASH Club works with Live & Learn under a WASH in Schools Advocacy Program, with the aim to promote activities that bring positive changes in water, hygiene, and sanitation issues in their school and community.
Live & Learn Community Engagement Officer, ‘Emaloni Tongi said the WASH Club has reached its vision.
“I want to express gratitude to everyone for the preparations that you did that we can witness the messages from the children.”
“We are also thankful that you have completed the tasks and we have noted what the children need in order to develop their healthy living because they are our future.”
‘Emaloni said the WASH project empowers school children and encourages them to change their behaviour and attitude about health at an early age and to continue to do so throughout their lives.
After the performance, the school requested the help of Live & Learn with a couple of projects to enchance the WASH program. This included repairing a spare water tank that can be used for handwashing and can be pipped to the bathroom, and a verandah where students can shelter from the rain when they line up to take turns washing their hands at the school's communal hand basin.
Live & Learn Environmental Education Tonga is funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through its Australian Aid program.
