Tonga starts second doses of COVID-19 vaccine [1]

The roll out of the second doses of COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine began today, June 24 in Nuku'alofa.
Today, shots were administered at the Basilica Church in Nuku’alofa and Vaiola Hospital at Tofoa, where they will continue on Friday.
The Ministry has released timetable for rollout of vacinations to various communites for next week (see below).
Health officials advised that those who can’t be vaccinated on their due date, may be inoculated after the due date, but it must be within 12-weeks since receiving the first dose.
Dr Veisinia Matoto Vaha'i said this week, “After receiving the second dose, it takes two to three weeks for the body to react to the vaccine to reach its highest protection level.”
She said the COVID-19 vaccine offers around 92% protection from severe illness or hospitalization.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is looking at getting the next batch of COVID-19 vaccines for the remainder of the target population (approximately 70%) as early as August.
A public health campaign has started to remind people to get their second doses.
