Tonga’s roll-out of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine continued on its second day, today, with more than 500 people vaccinated by this afternoon.

Acting Health CEO Dr Reynold 'Ofanoa said today, there had been no cases of major adverse effects reported nor any hospitalisations from those that have been vaccinated so far. People are advised on possible side effects and receive Information cards describing the possible side effects from the vaccination.

Matangi Tonga talked to some people who had experienced mild symptoms of headaches and flu-like symptoms during the first night after being vaccinated, and one said she took the following day off work to rest.

More than 500 people, mostly frontline workers and those vulnerable to the virus, have received their vaccinations. This includes health, police, defence and officials at Tonga's ports and airports. Vaccinations of frontline workers will continue until Saturday, April 17.

The vaccine roll-out expands next week to various communities for priority groups, including those 45-years and over, and those who are over 18-years-old with non-communicable diseases and/or with disabilities.

The Ministry of Health has released a vaccination schedule for people who living in Kolomotu’a and Kolofo’ou districts, and are in the priority group, at various venues from April 19-23, with more to be announced regarding other areas.

The vaccination program began on April 15 with HRH Princess Pilolevu Tuita receiving the first dose, along with Lord Tuita, the Prime Minister Hon. Rev. Dr Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa, cabinet ministers and church leaders at Falemasiva Hall in Havelu.
