The groundbreaking of a new Science and Innovation Centre marked Tupou College's 155th anniversary on February 20, at Toloa.
HM Queen Nanasipau'u officiated the ceremony.
The Principal, Rev. 'Alifeleti 'Atiola, said their anniversary project would cost an estimated $1.4 million pa'anga.
The centre will consist of four laboratories for General Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. There will also be staffrooms and a storeroom.
“We plan to complete this project next year,” he said.
Meanwhile, around $45,000 pa’anga was raised in generous donations during the anniversary celebration.
The celebration started with a Prayer Service led by Rev. Dr Tevita Koloa’ia Havea followed by the groundbreaking, luncheon and entertainment attended by the Prime Minister Rev. Dr Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa.
Rev. 'Atiola expressed the school's deepest gratitude to the Queen who was the guest of honour, guests, ex-students and parents for their attendance.
“Also present in numbers were Tupou College ex-students who are always our strong supporters,” he said.
In 2016, to mark the school’s 150th anniversary HM King Tupou VI opened the school's Taufa'ahau Tupou IV Memorial Building.
This building which cost around $3.3 million pa'anga was built by the Tupou College Old Boys Association with donations from ex-students, members of the Methodist Church, in Tonga, New Zealand, Australia and USA.
Tupou College is a secondary all boys boarding school operated by the Free Wesleyan Church.
