After Day One in Round Six of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series in Adelaide on Saturday. The Tongan team provided the first shock of the tournament by beating England 12-5 with two tries from Teuimuli Kaufusi. England then needed to beat Fiji if they were to avoid dropping to the Bowl competition on day two. The English beat Fiji 20-12 in a hard-fought encounter.

Tonga is in Pool A with Fiji, England and Canada, but after day one England and Fiji proceed from this pool to the Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic climax in which England captain Simon Amor kicked a penalty goal to ensure that his side topped the group from Fiji. Disappointment for Tonga after they won two of their matches, beating England 12-5 and Canada by 19-14 - then lost to Fiji by only a single point. With a couple of minutes to play Fiji looked dead and buried against their island rivals, 21-10 down before tries from Nasoni Roko and Lepani Nabuliwaqa won them a remarkable victory at the death, 22-21.

Tonga's loss to Fiji ended their chance of competing for the Cup, and dropped them down to the Bowl competition.

Tonga will play Japan in the quarter final for the Bowl today.
