At the end of the first round of the IRB Pacific Cup, both Tonga and Fiji have won their home games but have lost to each other in their away games.

Yesterday at Apia Park, last year's Pacific Cup Champion, Savai'i Samoa was narrowly defeated by 'Upolu Samoa 14-13.

The Tau'uta Reds and the Fijian Warriors' game at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku'alofa attracted a crowd of about 2,000. Noticeably, throughout the game the visitors' had vociferous supporters, but the silent majority won the day. Both sides scored a try each during the first half but the Warriors converted theirs whereas the Tau'uta missed the conversion, but they made up for it later with two converted penalties. At the break the Tau'uta was leading 11-10.

The Warriors scored the only try in the second half, and though appeared to be very dangerous on attack, and a number of times threatened the Tau'uta goal line but they crossed the try line only once. Their 10 points in the second half came from a converted try and a penalty. The score at full time was 23-20 for the Tau'uta Reds.

While the Tau'uta Reds were winning at Teufaiva, the Tautahi Gold were beaten by the Fiji Barbarians at Churchill Park, Lautoka, 20-18.

The Tautahi Gold and the Tau'uta Reds will meet at Teufaiva Stadium this Saturday to decide who is the real Tongan champion.
